More model informationThis smoking pipe is from the wreck of the A1. This vessel was a submarine built and used by the Royal Navy. The A1 actually sank twice: the first time, during which all of its crew were killed, it collided with the SS Berwick Castle during exercises in 1904. It was recovered, but during unmanned trials in 1911, it was lost again off Selsey Bill, south coast of the UK. The site has been scheduled under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act due to its importance.
The real artefact is on display at the Shipwreck Centre and Maritime Museum on the Isle of Wight, UK.
This model was produced as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Fathoming the Future project.
