Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the seventh largest in the Solar System. It is a terrestrial planet, meaning it has a solid rocky surface similar to Earth, Mercury, and Venus.
Key features and interesting facts about Mars:
Name and color: The planet is named after the Roman god of war, Mars. It is often called the “Red Planet” because of the reddish-orange hue of its surface. This color is due to the presence of large amounts of iron oxide (rust) in the soil and dust.
Size and mass: Mars is about half the diameter of Earth (about 6,779 km). Its mass is about 11% of Earth’s mass. The surface area of Mars is almost equal to the combined area of Earth’s continents.
Atmosphere: Mars has a very thin atmosphere, consisting mainly of carbon dioxide (about 95%), as well as small amounts of nitrogen and argon. Due to the thin atmosphere, temperature differences on Mars are very large.
