This 1971 LeMans is a great example of those cars. Powered by a 350 C.I. V8 paired to a 2-barrel carburetor, this Pontiac’s 350 still breathes well and cruises even better. Power from the 350 gets to the rear end through a 3-speed, column shifted automatic.
Your 1971 Sport Lemans is a very cool car. Your are correct that appearance wise the front clip (hood w/scoops, fenders, endura bumper) are the major differences. Mechanically a GTO would have a larger, higher HP engine, dual exhaust and larger sway bars, but they are very much the same other than that.
The Pontiac LeMans was a model name that was applied to subcompact- and intermediate-sized automobiles marketed by Pontiac from 1962 to 1981 (1983 in Canada). Originally a trim upgrade based on the Tempest, it spawned the industry changing signature muscle car, the GTO, in 1964.
