Serhiy Lytvynenko. Project of the Monumental Headstone to Ivan Franko, 1931
The project of the monumental headstone to Ivan Franko, by Serhiy Lytvynenko, resulted in the sculpture group placed at Lychakiv Cemetery, and opened on the 28th of May, 1933. Included are two allegorical figures of stonemasons taken from Franko’s poem ‘Stonemasons’ – one is standing and the other is half-lying near the legs of the first. We can see holes in the hands of the upper figure where a hammer was placed; the hammer has since been lost. The project has a distinctive, flexible solution of figures in correlation to its background of rock. This exact project was probably submitted in 1931 for the competition, organized by the Committee for the Creation of a Headstone to Ivan Franko in 1926.
