Raccoon cranium. The raccoon (Procyon lotor), also known as the northern or Guadeloupe raccoon, is native to North America though they have been introduced to some parts of Europe and Asia. These little scavengers tend to live near populated areas but try to make their homes near accessible water and woodland, from tropical to cold temperatures. Due to their proximity to humans, raccoons are known to look for food in trash receptacles and–if they can manage to get in–people’s homes. They are quite intelligent and opportunistic, using their small human-like hands to grab food nearby, which can be plants or a variety of smaller animals, including fish, insects, bird eggs and frogs. Raccoons are considered a primary vector for rabies.
