Gothic cross in Sopron. Dating back to the Middle Ages, the so-called rest crosses were illuminated with a lantern and served as signposts for hikers and travelers. The baker’s cross dating from 1484 once stood on the road to Fertőrákos (Kroisbach). The resting cross can be seen today in the garden of Villa Lenck. The legend of the baker’s cross is connected to the notorious robber castle of the area, Macskakő Castle.
The master baker was a regular supplier to the “bailiff” of Rákos. He brought bread and various baked goods to the castle on foot and was sometimes paid for his work. He was warned to be careful, the robbers could attack him. Although he was as careful as he could be, he could not escape his fate. The bandits of Macskakő Castle watched him, overran him, took his earnings and even killed him. Where the assassination took place, the citizens erected the stone cross by the roadside.
