Rattin Castle (WM034-008---)3D ModelNoAI
Rattin Castle, stands in the south-east corner of Co. Westmeath, in the parish of Killucan, barony of Farbill, less than a kilometer to the south and east of the border with County Meath, 4.2km to the SW of the town of Kinnegad. The townland name Rattin is derived from the Irish word Raitin meaning unenclosed land or possibly commonage. In the 16th and 17th-centuries the castle belonged to the Darcy family. The castle was built in two phases. The first phase consisted of a tower with rounded angles and wooden floors which was built in the 14th or 15th century. In the 16th century the castle was extended to the east by the addition of a multi-storey vaulted wing with squared corners. The entrance to the castle was through a doorway now visible as a broken out gap, located off centre to the north in the eastern wall. During this rebuilding a fireplace with chimney stack and stone vaulted ceiling were added. For more information, visit: https://maps.archaeology.ie/HistoricEnvironment/?SMRS=WM034-008—
