This 3D reconstruction was created by Benedict Dyson, a masters student in Digital Archaeology at the University of York, to go on an interpretation board next to the Scheduled Monument (1008042) of Swine Castle Hill near Bransholme, north of Hull. The interpretation board was put up in 2023 as part of the Environment Agency’s Holderness Drain Flood Alleviation Scheme. Swine Castle Hill is a 13th century medieval Motte Castle.
No upstanding remains other than the motte mound are now present. It is therefore difficult for visitors to imagine what the site may have looked like. Benedict’s digital reconstruction gives an idea of what the castle may have looked like during the medieval period in its surrounding landscape. A simple estate, with a central timber hall and ancillary buildings.
The reconstruction and accompanied metadata has been archived with the Archaeology Data Service (ADS).
