The establishment of the temple started after the Kuni-kyo Capital was transferred to Osaka by Emperor Shomu in 744. The site represents both the Yamashiro-Kokubunji Temple and the Kuni-kyo Capital and is designated as a National Historic Site.
These remains include foundation platforms and foundation stones.
