More model informationThe lid of this charming little cottage opens to reveal compartments for sewing materials and a pin cushion. It is a museum replica of an ivory workbox, not from England but from Vizigapatnam in South-West India, where a thriving industry produced decorative items, boxes and even furniture from inscribed bone and ivory. Originally thought to date to the 1840s or later the original is now dated to the 1770s or 80s, and therefore could well have been owned and used by Elizabeth Macarthur (1766-1850) herself.
Elizabeth Farm collection (original in private collection).
