This is a reproduction of preihistoric rock engravings obtained with the technique of “epigraphic casts” (“estampage” in French and “squeeze” in English) by Clarence Bicknell around Monte Bego (Maritime Alps) at the beginning of XX Century (sheet #44 from roll#224).
The technique consists in applying a glue-free layer of paper over the engraving then gently pushing it with brushes or wet rags in order to get a precise model of the engraving. The paper, once dry, is removed, obtaining this way a perfect copy of it. This “squeeze” documents a couple of “corniformi”, i.e. stylized oxen (left figures), which were amongst the most figured items by the prehistoric and protohistoric communities of the Monte Bego area.
Clarence Bicknell donated this item to Arturo Issel to enrich the former collections of the Geological Museum, nowadays included in the DISTAV collections at the University of Genoa.
This is the first time that a “squeeze” is transformed in a 3D model for visualization.
