More model informationThe Eagle engine was developed by Rolls-Royce following a request from the Admiralty and War Office for aircraft engines during the First World War. Between 1915 and 1928 a total of 4,681 Eagles were produced, powering a range of aeroplanes and airships for military and civilian use.
This particular engine is one of two that powered the Vickers Vimy flown by John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown during their historic transatlantic crossing in June 1919. Despite fog, snow and ice the two men succeeded in making the first non-stop crossing of the Atlantic in sixteen hours and twenty-seven minutes, before crash landing in a bog in Connemara, Ireland .
