More model informationThis is a reconstruction of a Roman oscilla from the Casa degli Amorini Dorati (House of the Golden Cupids), Pompeii. The disk is made of marble, and would have been suspended from the rafters of a colonnade, facing a garden area. It was probably painted, although only traces of an orange-coloured pigment can be found on its surface today. The colour seen here is an artistic reconstruction to illustrate how colour could have been used to emphasize certain features of the relief carving. Oscilla could spin in the air, pushed by breezes moving through the garden area, allowing viewers glimpses of both sides.
