More model informationThis wonderful silver coin is a late Roman argenteus minted in Constantinople under the first Christian emperor Constantine the Great (AD 306-337). The coin, which is in the university coin collection of Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Germany, shows Constantine with a conspicuous upward gaze borrowed from portraits of Alexander the Great. On the reverse is the Roman victory goddess Victoria with wreath and palm leaf. The legend reads CONSTANTINVS AVG (‘Emperor Constantine’).
