Rudamina mound is one of the most famous monuments of ancient Jotvingians. It is located on a hill formed during the ice age, which is 198 m above sea level, 60 m wide and 83 m long.
The mound was used for defense purposes in the 5th – 14th centuries and was installed in 4 times. Wooden defensive fortifications rose above the embankment. The arrowheads found on the outside of the embankment testify that the defensive fortifications burned during a violent attack on the castle after it had been fired from the arches.
It is stated that the castle of Duke Ringaudas (built in 1240) stood on the mound, where Mindaugas was crowned as a king. The castle was destroyed by the Crusaders in 1381, when gunpowder bombings were used for the storm.
