The round chapel, also called Johanneskapelle, is located at the western end of Petronell-Carnuntum and dates back to the 12th century. It is owned by the Abensperg-Traun family and is in use as a crypt chapel. The round building, which is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Austria, stands on an artificially raised hill and was surrounded by a perimeter wall. The remains of the fortification still exist today. The first documented mention of the chapel was late, in 1429.
The chapel consists of a cylindrical main building with a diameter of about 15 meters and an apse of about 7 meters. The whole structure is surrounded by a pedestal. 18 three-quarter columns divide the main building. The tympanum on the portal shows the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River. The entrance is closed by a door made of larch wood and covered with iron plates. The wall thickness is about 2.50 meters, in the apse 0.9 meters.
