Fossil tooth of a saber-toothed cat in the DISTAV collection (University of Genova). Immerse yourself in the ancient world with this 3D model of Machairodus, the iconic “Knife Tooth Cat.” This genus of saber-toothed cats, whose name derives from the Greek words for “knife” and “tooth,” inhabited Africa, Eurasia, and North America during the late Miocene. Machairodus is an extinct genus of saber-toothed cat that lived in North America, Africa, and Europe from the Miocene (23.03-5.333 million years ago) to the Pleistocene (2.58-0.0117 million years ago). The skeletal dimensions indicate a medium size similar to the actual big felines. This specimen was retrieved from Sassello (Liguria SV, Italy) by Issel, and published by him in 1910, tav. IV Fig. 2.
This model was realized by Glenda Cantale during the Universal Civil Service (SCU) at the Genoa University.
