More model information

The Samuel Mather was built in 1887 and was a wooden bulk freighter with dimensions length 246 ft, beam 40 ft, and depth 19 ft. On November 21, 1891 in thick fog the Mather was sunk in a collision with the propeller Brazil in Whitefish Bay, Lake Superior. The Mather was downbound from Duluth, Minnesota headed for Buffalo, New York with a cargo of wheat. There was no loss of life and all survivors were picked up by the Brazil. The Samuel Mather lies SE of Whitefish Pt and is one of the best dives in the Great Lakes. The ship lies in slightly less than 170’ of water in a remarkable state of preservation and is a great example of a wooden freighter of the 1880’s era. The model which has some obvious gaps was created with some control point alignment from 7,376 images from three different cameras, four divers, and parts of eight dives in 15 ft of visibility. Due to the poor visibility and size of ship it was a challenge to manage the overlap in the photo passes especially on the featureless hull sides.
