More model informationA copper ingot recovered from the wreck of the 1622 galleon Santa Margarita. Margarita carried 5 tons of copper in the form of 191 ingots, most of which were recovered by Spanish salvagers in the 1620s. The copper came from the “El Cobre” mine located in the extreme southeast of Cuba, where it had been extracted by African slaves for the Spanish crown. The ingots were loaded onto the galleon in Havana. In Spain, the copper was largely used to make bronze artillery. This piece is a “splash” type ingot formed by molten copper poured into a shallow depression in the ground. It measures 49.5 x 22.0 x 6.5 centimeters and weighs 22.7 kilograms (50 pounds).
