More model informationThe most famous feature of the Roman collection is the Uvarov sarcophagus dating from 210 AD. It was named after its owner, Count Sergei Uvarov, Minister for National Enlightenment. In terms of the delicacy and subtle beauty of its execution it can rightly be considered the finest piece of ancient craftsmanship. The sarcophagus has an unusual oval shape. It resembles a vat in which grapes are crushed in autumn, so that wine is produced by January. It is not surprising, that the sarcophagus depicts the mystery of the wine-god Dionysus
