Scattery Island in the Shannon Estuary was the location of a monastery founded by St Senan in the early 6th century. The remains of six medieval churches and a round tower have survived. This cross slab, c. 9th/10th century, is located west of a small church called St Senan’s Bed (CL067-024002). The slab is similar in style to one of the types found at Clonmacnoise monastic site on the banks of the Shannon in Co. Offaly.
The stone is inscribed with a Latin cross made up of incised ribbon interlace, doubled along the cross arms and shaft, which cross over forming triquetra knots at each terminal. Above the cross is inscribed the words ‘or do moinach’, which translates from the Irish as ‘a prayer for Moínach’. Beneath the cross and continuing on both sides of the shaft is a slightly longer inscription in larger text designed to be read from the opposite orientation. It reads ‘or do moenach aite mog roin’ (‘a prayer for Móenach tutor of Mogrón’). See a model with lichen digitally removed: https://skfb.ly/oXCPY
