Scyllarides latus (Latreille, 1803), the “European slipper lobster”, known as “magnosa” and “cicala di mare” in Italy, is one of the largest decapod crustaceans in the Mediterranean Sea, potentially attaining a lenght of up to 45 cm and a weight of ~2 Kg. Due to its large size and delicate flesh, it has always been sought after by fishermen and object of intensive spearfishing, in most Mediterranean countries and on the Atlantic coasts of the Iberian Peninsula. For this reason the species is now protected and included in Annex V of the Habitats Directive, in Annex III of the Bern Convention and in Annex III of the SPA/BIO Protocol of the Barcelona Convention. This specimen was accidentally collected with trammel nets on May 7 2019 in Porto Maurizio (Imperia) and, being dead, given to the University for study. The specimen is now part of the zoological collection of the University of Genoa.
This model was realized by Micol Zurzolo during the Universal Civil Service (SCU) at the Genoa University.
