Over 7-9 May 2021, Program researchers traveled to the Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary (MBPRNMS) to record the remains of the unidentified “Sea Scout Wreck.” The Sea Scout Wreck’s identity is connected to a number of stories held by local people. “Sea Scout” is a a 104-foot United States Army Air Force (USAAF) crash boat (design 235A), of which 158 were builtThese craft were wooden hulled with ferrous bulkheads and were built during the Second World War for intended use in the Pacific Theater. The wreck has undergone a rapid process of collapse since it was likely deposited in the burning basing in the 1970s. The wreckage today sits in shallow (4-5 feet) of water, and appears to be held together by 7 ferrous bulkheads that twist the remaining structure at various angles from bow to stern. Our work in the sanctuary was done under permit with the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT). Thanks to MHT and NOAA (MBPRNMS, and the Maritime Heritage Program).
