Small limestone figures of servants appear in tombs of the Fifth and Sixth Dynasties; their presence insured support for the dead in the afterlife.
The Egyptian hieroglyph for “brewer” bears close resemblance to the stance of this figure. This beer maker was probably represented in the act of sealing a now missing beer jar.
