The final mask to appear in the Topeng Pajegan is that of Sida Karya Putih, a mesmerizing and powerful character who checks to see that everything is appropriate and wards off evil spirits that may try to disrupt the occasion. As the Topeng nears an end, the children in the audience begin to glance about nervously in anticipation of the entrance of this ghostly white character. When he appears, they scatter in all directions as he tries to catch one of them. He then brings the child to the performance area to receive some yellow rice and Chinese coins from his offering. The white face represents the purity of his person- ality and symbolizes Siwa of the Hindu trinity. The strange leer reflects the moral of his personal story: things are not always what they appear to be.
