More model informationDomovina: vzhodni del Severne Amerike. Opis: Sivi dren je do 4 m visok grm s številnimi olesenelimi pritlikami. Lubje je gladko, temnordeče, golo in bleščeče (redko rumene ali rjave barve); z izrazitimi lenticelami.Listi so nasprotno razvrščeni, jajčastosuličasti, s 5–7 pari stranskih žil, dolgi 8–12 cm, posebej veliki na enoletnih vejah. Zgornja in spodnja stran listov je različnih barv: zgoraj so zeleni, spodaj sivi do sivozeleni. Cvetovi so štirištevni, dišeči, beli in združeni v gosta, 5–8 cm široka češuljasta socvetja.Plodovi so sočni, enosemenski, beli ali svetlosivi, kroglasti, 6–8 mm dolgi. Čas cvetenja: maj–junij. Zrelost semen: september–oktober. Razmnoževanje in razširjanje: Vegetativno se širi s zakoreninjanjem spodnjih poganjkov,ter odlomljenih ali odrezanih vej. Razširja ga tudi ptice, ki pojedo plodove. Rastišča: Vrsti ustrezajo težka, vlažna, namočena oz. zamočvirjena tla, v naravi se zato pojavlja v močvirjih, jelševih grezih in v podobnih vlagoljubnih združbah.
