George Gabb Sleeping Giant Seagrape Wood 170 x 78 x 78 cm 1972
George Gabb, initially crafted small trinkets from materials like turtle shell and wood, drawing inspiration from the sea and coral. Evolving to sculpting larger pieces from Rosewood and Ziricote, he yearned for deeper artistic expression. Despite discouragement, Gabb persisted in creating a wooden abstraction of “prayer,” later pivotal in securing him a scholarship to study art in England. This sculpture catalyzed his unique artistic philosophy, bridging poetry & sculpture, emphasizing art’s transcendence beyond human understanding. Throughout his career, spanning Belize, Canada, Jamaica, and the US, Gabb’s poignant sculptures, often featuring captivating faces emerging from abstract wood, gained international acclaim, exhibited at prestigious venues like the 1984 World’s Fair. Despite his declining health in later years, Gabb remained deeply passionate about his work. “When I work, I am alive. Oh, how I wish I could work into the night.”
