The 223 ft steambarge Smith Moore was built in 1880 for the iron ore trade from Marquette, MI to Cleveland. Like many of the early wooden freighters she carried two sail masts. She is listed as being powered by a single expansion engine but the model obviously shows two similar sized cylinders with a split steam supply so I suspect she was a dual cylinder single expansion steam engine which is somewhat rare. In 1889 Smith Moore was damaged in a collision in dense fog with the steamer James Pickands while carrying a load of ore from Marquette bound for Cleveland. It was being towed by the M, M, Drake to Munising after the fog lifted when she sank two miles from the destination. The wreck is routinely buried and unburied by shifting sand. This model year found her much exposed. The model was created from 2,691 30-megapixel images shot by Andrew Goodman on two DPV dives in the 2023 season.
