SMS Dresden was a light cruiser built for the Imperial German navy in Hamberg, and holds the class name with Emden being her sister. She was laid down in 1906, launched in October 1907 and then commissioned in November 1908. Her battle record included the Battle of Coronel in November 1914 where she saw action off the Falkland islands, enguaging HMS Glasgow before brreaking off. Her last action would take place in March 1915 in Cummberland bay Chile, which would see her against HMS Glasgow again, however she had been interned in Chile as her captain deemed her engines in too bad a state to be sea worthy. That being said Glasgow opened fire regardless of her being interned in a neutral port, which ended when captain Lüdecke raised the white flag and formally surrenderd the ship. She was then scuttled and sunk in Cummberland Bay where she rests to this day.
