More model informationThis massive specimen of sphalerite (ZnS) comes from the mines at Broken Hill in NSW. In addition to sphalerlite, small amounts of chalcopyrite and rhodonite are also present. The translucence and lustre of sphalerite varies significantly with increasing iron content. Sphalerite from the Broken Hill region is typically fairly high in iron, leading to the low translucence and strong metallic lustre evident in this specimen. Low iron varieties typically have a sub-metallic lustre and moderate translucence.
