Sphinx allegory of Autumn watching over the Petit Trianon Belvedere in the Queen’s hamlet in Versailles. Simplified model.

The Belvedere is raised on an octagonal stone base, which is accessed by four steps guarded by pairs of sphinxes. These are executed in 1778 by Joseph Deschamps Stone Conflans four feet long. These “guardians of harmony” are capped with attributes symbolizing the seasons. Heavily damaged after the Revolution and some even disappeared during the nineteenth century, these statues were restored or copied in Tercé stone. The four originals are kept in the reserves.
