More model informationThis statue of a Sphinx was recovered at the turn of the 19th Century in the Roman town of Apulum, nowadays Alba Iulia, Romania. It was most likely part of a funerary monument as the Sphinx is thought to symbolize the imminence of Death while also being a guardian of the tomb and that of the souls within, chasing away any evil spirits that might interfere. The sculpture, measuring 25 cm at the base, can be traced back to the early collections of the first museum in Alba Iulia, established by Adalbert Cserni in 1886. It is now part of the extensive collection of Roman art at the National Museum of the Union.
The model is a downsized version (decimated to 500k) generated based on a dense point cloud of 5.5M points.
