The SS United States is a passenger liner built in 1952 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company for the United States Lines. It was designed by William Francis Gibbs and financed by both the US Navy and United States Lines. The ship is over 53,000 tons, carried 1,928 passengers with 900 crew, and could travel at an average speed of over 35 knots. To this day it holds the Blue Riband record for highest speed for a passenger ship on the westbound transatlantic crossing. The ship was withdrawn from service in 1969. It was recently saved from the scrapyard and is now owned by the SS United States Conservancy which plans to refurbish the ship and possibly make it a stationary attraction in New York City. Presently the ship is on the National Register of Historic Places and is docked at Pier 82 in Philadelphia.
