Turin. Italy. Egyptian statue of Aanen, second priest of Amon. New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, reign of Amenhotep III (1390-1353 B.C) Museo Egizio
A dignitary wearing a wig, a long gown, and the leopard skin of a priest. On the ornament at his belt we read the names of Amenhotep III. Anen, the inscription tells us, is an astronomer priest, “one who knows the procession of the sky,” that is, the paths of heavenly bodies. That is why the spots on the leopard skin are rendered as stars. He is also “one who puts things in their proper place” (that is, offerings for the gods in the appointed place) and “appeases the gods with his voice.” Anen was the brother of queen Teye, wife of Amenhotep III (1390-1353 BC).
