“Portraits” de dirigeants défunts, ces statuettes anthropomorphes ou mma étaient déposées, au cours de cultes funéraires, dans un lieu commémoratif appelé mmaso, différent du lieu d’inhumation.
Cette sculpture en argile, est modelée autour d’une tige en bois. Elle est cuite, puis recouverte d’un vernis végétal noir. Elle est caractéristique des productions du royaume Sanwi qui se développe au nord-est de la Côte d’Ivoire à partir du 18e siècle.
