More model informationThis cross was likely carved in the early 600s, not long after the death of St Columba. St Columba and 12 companions traveled to Iona from Ireland in AD 563. Columba’s fame has brought pilgrims to Iona since the 7th century.
The carved inscription marks a grave, and reads: ‘The Stone of Echoid’. The name could be refering to Echodi, King of Dal Riáta, who died in 629, or perhaps the monk Echodi, one of Columba’s original twelve followers.
To this day, it’s still not known who was buried here.
It is now on display in the Iona Abbey Museum. For information on visiting, go to our website.
