Name: Stratford Strings Complex
Location: Montreal, Quebec
Originally built in 1972 as a mixed-use housing and arts facility, the Stratford Strings Complex was designed to resemble a giant upright guitar—celebrating the city’s vibrant music scene. Its whimsical architecture featured studio apartments, rehearsal spaces, and rooftop performance decks. Over time, economic shifts and zoning disputes led to partial abandonment. Artists stayed, adapting the structure into a surreal vertical commune. Today, its steampunk facade of pipes, chimneys, and windowed alcoves draws photographers and urban explorers alike. Though structurally sound, it remains unrenovated—an eccentric relic of Montreal’s creative resilience.
