I’m usually a hardsurface artist, environmental objects and props, I rarely do organic stuff, particularly not creatures. However, a close friend of mine loves bats, and I’ve been wanting to make a real effort to learn to sculpt and do retopo for organic creatures for a while, so I’ve spent the last few weeks introducing myself to the basics, and came up with this. A slightly stylish bust of a bat. Far from perfect, and in Blender particularly I need to learn more about creating fur and eyes… but it’s okay for a first I think.
Sculpted and Modelled in Blender, Textures in Substance Painter, Fur Shells textures (for Sketchfab) in Substance Designer.
Also, if anyone could explain the texture error I’m getting in Sketchfab, would be super helpful. Seems like if you move the view below the world ground plane, the fur textures flatten and bug out. I’m using shells with alpha textures for the fur to fake fuzz in realtime, I know other artists have used similar techniques, first time encountering this.
