This is my stylized tree golem which I made for my college project. Using blender, I sculpted a high-poly version of the golem which amounted to millions of tris; being honest, this made me especially nervous since I thought I’d go over the assigned tri-count of 16k tris with my retopology to keep all of that detail, but after retopologizing the entire golem, it only amounted to 10,941 tris in total!
For the textures, I used substance painter to essentially paint directly onto the model (after baking the high-poly version onto the low-poly version) rather than doing it with photoshop where I’d have to draw the textures on the UV of the golem. This allowed me to get this much cleaner texture, and it also made it much easier for me to give my golem more ‘special’ effects, such as the height on the moss and eyes. I also used substance painter to bake high-poly leaf sculpts onto planes so I could have optimized low-poly leaves to put on the head of my golem.
Overall, I’m really happy with how he came out.
