Surges in Van Keulenfjorden, Svalbard 1936

Van Keulenfjorden, in southwestern Spitsbergen, is famous for its high concentration of surge type glaciers. These are strongly governed by internal dynamics, where they can suddenly advance by several kilometres, with no clear connection to climate change. Here, signs of past glacier surging is explored in 1936.

The model was made from oblique photographs taken in 1936 by the Norwegian Polar Institute.
