Swansea Heads fossiliferous tuff3D Model
This sample is from the upper section of a large tuff (volcanic ash) layer exposed at Swansea Heads. The tuff is up to 8 metres thick and buried a Glossopteris swamp represented by the lower coal seam exposed in the rock platform. This sample is from several metres up the cliffline - just below a second coal seam. The ash in this sample has been reworked by water, with small scale sedimentary structures evident. It is also host to a multitude of broken plant fragments, including leaves and small stems, that are apparent in this model. This broken material presumably sank into shallow water along with the fine volcanic ash and has been preserved. Initial is looking onto the bedding plane. If you tilt the model you will see that it is finely laminated.
