The Castle Oak is ~800 years old & a multi stemmed tree (due to pollarding) with a 9.32m girth. This large oak is in excellent condition (for an ancient tree) & seems very fertile as many of its seedlings can be found growing on an adjoining meadow. This wonderful oak is one of ~70 ancient trees found within the Dinefwr National Nature Reserve & 18th century landscape Deer Park. This was the 1st National Park established in Wales largely due to the national importance of these ancient oaks.
The SCATTER project was funded by the Woodland Trust & carried out by researchers from UCL with logistical support & ancient oak expertise from The Ancient Tree Forum. If visiting ancient trees, please be respectful to these living legends and their custodians.
