Constructed between 1771 and 1793, the Church of Our Lady of Mercy (Igreja Mercês de Cima) stands as one of Ouro Preto’s architectural marvels, renowned for its stunning beauty, rich history, and distinctive architecture. Nestled within the colonial city, this church, alongside its adjacent cemetery, faces the threat of landslides and erosion—a consequence of shifting rainfall patterns and the area’s unique geographical features.
In 2023, CyArk embarked on a documentation project of the site, including Mina du Veloso, aimed at highlighting the effects of climate change on cultural heritage. This initiative not only seeks to raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing historical landmarks but also commemorates the significant contributions of Afro-Brazilians to the city’s cultural and developmental fabric. This project was made possible through the support of Iron Mountain, through their Living Legacy Initiative.
