The Gravestone of Arthur Guinness, Oughterard3D ModelNoAI
Located in the ruined medieval church of Oughterard in Co. Kildare, this stone marks the burial vault of the world-famous brewer Arthur Guinness and his family.
Arthur was likely born in Oughterard, the homeplace of his mother, Elizabeth Read, or in nearby Celbridge, where his father, Richard, was an agent for Dr Arthur Price. A private chaplain to William Conolly of Castletown House, the speaker of the Irish House of Commons, Price was later to be appointed Archbishop of Cashel. Such connections helped Arthur Guinnes establish himself in brewing. He was a Godson of Price, after whom he was named, and he received a bequest from him of £100 in 1752. This allowed Guinness, whose father had been involved in a brewing business in Celbridge, to established a brewery at Leixlip, Co. Kildare, in 1755. Four years later he bought the now world-famous St Game’s Gate brewery in Dublin.
Oughterard is an early medieval ecclesiastical hilltop site with a partial round tower (c.11th century) and a ruined medieval church.
