These c. 1900 structures in Tampa, Florida are two of the last remaining “shotgun” houses from an African American area known historically as The Scrub. Shotgun homes were prevalent here, so called because it was believed if you fired a gun through the front door the bullet would pass through without hitting anything and exit the back. Rooms in these houses are directly connected and lack hallways. The structures are narrow and were inexpensive to build, fitting compactly on very narrow lots. Shotgun homes were common in African American communities, but are today an imperiled style of architecture, with few preserved and many razed during the 1960s and 70s urban renewal. These homes were purchased and are being restored by the Tampa Housing Authority and have been 3D documented to assist with their stabilization and restoration.
