The mausoleum was built in the eleventh century on the grave of one of the first khans of the Karakhani dynasty, who controlled enormous territories and founded an enormous territory – the state of Karakhan.
The mausoleum is in the central part of Taraz city on an intersection of the streets Tole Bi and Karakhan; there it is a part of a cult-memorial complex, built on the site of a medieval cemetery.
There are many legends about the person Karakhan. Most of them connect the hero Karakhan with a young beautiful girl named Aysha, whose mausoleum is in the village of Aysha-Bibi, 20 km from Taraz city. The story about their love and Aysha`s death from a snake bite leaves nobody untouched.
According to legend, the mausoleum was built on Karakhan`s (Aulie-ata) grave, and for a long time from 1836 until 1936 our town was named Aulie-ata, in honour of Karakhan.
