**The Rocking Melodeon ** open bellows section
The Rocking Melodeon was invented in 1831 in Ponkapoag, Canton, Massachusetts, USA by James Amiraux Bazin. (Bazin, Boston 1798 - Ponkapoag 1883)
The instrument is also called lap organ and elbow organ.
Lap organ because it is played on the lap. Elbow organ because it is pressed down with the elbows. Rocking, because it starts to rock when it is pressed together.
Free reeds for organ building were first documented in the USA in 1811, and came from Europe (Panhamonikon by Johann Nepomuk Mälzel)
The Rocking Melodeon is probably the first free reed organ invented, developed and built entirely in the USA.
