Thomas Jefferson's Megalonyx Bones (VCU_3D_7312)3D ModelNoAI
The bones shown here were sent to Thomas Jefferson in the late 18th century from what is now West Virginia and are the holotype for Megalonyx jeffersonii. These fossils were 3-D scanned with a NextEngine Desktop 3-D scanner from March 9 to 11, 2020 at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. The arrangement of these bones follows that used in a drawing by Titian Peale and published in Caspar Wistar (1799) Description of the bones deposited by President Jefferson in the museum of the society.
