The bones shown here were sent to Thomas Jefferson in the late 18th century from what is now West Virginia and are the holotype for Megalonyx jeffersonii. These fossils were 3-D scanned with a NextEngine Desktop 3-D scanner from March 9 to 11, 2020 at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. The arrangement of these bones follows that used in a drawing by Titian Peale and published in Caspar Wistar (1799) Description of the bones deposited by President Jefferson in the museum of the society. Transactions of the American Philosophical Society 4:526–531. A downloadable version of this illustration can be found here: http://lhldigital.lindahall.org/cdm/ref/collection/darwin/id/1521. Museum specimen number 12507. Courtesy of the cademy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.
