More model informationThrombolites are shallow-water microbial mats that grow in mushroom-like shapes up to a couple of meters across, and can be found on both sea shores and lake shores. Thrombolites are made by microorganisms (mostly cyanobacteria) that trap and bind sediment. Unlike stromatolites, they do not have an internal laminated structure, but a clotted one. The ones in this model are growing today in a saline coastal lake. The oldest thrombolites in the fossil record are from the Neoproterozoic.
