More model informationCeramic, England, 43-410AD This is a fragment of a ceramic roof tile. An ox walked over it while it was still wet, leaving a permanent impression in the finished tile. The appearance of animal footprints on tiles is not uncommon but they are usually smaller animals like dogs and cats. The appearance of an ox hoof print is quite rare. The range of animals identified from the marks left on tiles can help give an insight into Roman agriculture in the area. Tiles with footprints weren’t discarded by their creators as long as a hole hadn’t been formed. They remained fully functional and were still used in buildings, including at Lullingstone Villa.
